The drug belongs to the group of α2-antagonists.
Atipamezole hydrochloride selectively blocks α2-receptors, facilitating the release of the neurotransmitter norepinephrine in the central and peripheral nervous system. This increases neuronal activity and activates the sympathetic nervous system, counteracting the effects caused by activated α2-receptors due to medetomidine (Imomedin) or dexmedetomidine.
Atipamezole rapidly restores normal activity in animals; they wake up and can move. Its effect on the respiratory and cardiovascular systems is minimal, but when used after α2-agonists, sympathetic activity increases, resulting in elevated heart rate and arterial pressure.
After intramuscular administration, absorption is rapid; maximum plasma concentration is reached in 10–15 minutes; elimination half-life is about 1 hour. Metabolism occurs primarily in the liver, partially in the kidneys, and excretion is mainly via urine.
Antimedi is used after the administration of Imomedin (medetomidine HCl) or dexmedetomidine to:
Neutralize sedative and analgesic effects
Reduce possible adverse effects on the cardiovascular and respiratory systems
Administer intramuscularly (IM), once, 15 minutes after Imomedin injection and no later than 60 minutes after it. Usually, sedation caused by Imomedin is reversed, and the animal regains normal activity 5–10 minutes after Antimedi injection. If sedation persists, a repeated dose may be given 10–15 minutes after the first injection.
Dosage guidelines:
Wild animals, ruminants, pigs, horses, dogs: Antimedi dose in μg/kg is 5 times the medetomidine dose; in ml, it equals the medetomidine dose.
Cats: Antimedi dose in μg/kg is 2.5 times the medetomidine dose; in ml, it is half of the medetomidine dose.
Example:
Wild and domestic animals, pigs, horses, dogs:
Medetomidine HCl dose: 0.4 ml/10 kg
Antimedi dose: 0.4 ml/10 kg
Cats:
Medetomidine dose: 0.4 ml/5 kg
Antimedi dose: 0.2 ml/5 kg
Antimedi is also used after combined medetomidine HCl + ketamine anesthesia to accelerate recovery. In this case, the dose remains the same. Injection should be given no earlier than 30–40 minutes after ketamine injection.
Dogs: Within the first 10 minutes, hypotension may occur. In rare cases, vomiting, defecation, short-term dyspnea, and muscle tremors.
Cats: Possible hypothermia after administration.
Overdose may cause transient hyperactivity and tachycardia. Symptoms are generally mild and resolve within a few hours. In cats, minimize external stimuli during hyperactivity.
Symptoms of overdose can be alleviated by administering half the dose of medetomidine HCl.
Do not use during pregnancy and lactation
