Vaccine Against Trichophytosis in Cattle

Vaccine Against Trichophytosis in Cattle

The vaccine is a lyophilized, dried, attenuated live strain of the fungus Trichophyton verrucosum, grown on a solid nutrient medium.

Description

Externally, the preparation is a uniform dry mass tablet for preparing a homogeneous suspension. Its color varies from light gray to cream.

The vaccine is contained in a 10 cm³ sterile glass vial (available in 5, 10, 20, and 40 injectable doses).

A sterile isotonic sodium chloride solution (diluent) is used for vaccine dilution.

The vaccine should be stored in its original packaging in a dark place at a temperature of 2-10°C.

The vaccine has a shelf life of 12 months from the date of manufacture, provided storage and transportation conditions are met.

Biological Properties

The vaccine has preventive and therapeutic properties. It contains microconidia of the live vaccine strain Trichophyton verrucosum, which stimulate the production of specific antibodies, ensuring immunity against trichophytosis.

One dose of the vaccine contains 20 to 60 million live fungal microconidia. The vaccine is safe and non-reactogenic.

In vaccinated animals, immunity develops 30 days after revaccination and lasts for 7 years.

Method of Application

The vaccine is used for the treatment and prevention of trichophytosis in cattle.

Preparation of the Vaccine

Before use, the vaccine is diluted in the diluent. A sterile syringe is used to aseptically inject 5 cm³ of diluent into the 10 cm³ vial containing the dry vaccine. The vial is shaken to form a uniform suspension.

This suspension is then transferred to another vial with diluent in a 1 cm³ suspension to 5 cm³ diluent ratio. The vaccine is then ready for use.

Administration

The vaccine is administered intramuscularly in the gluteal region.

The injection site should be shaved and treated with an antiseptic before administration.

Syringes and needles should be sterilized before use.

The diluted vaccine should be used within 12 hours. Any unused diluted vaccine must be destroyed by boiling for 30 minutes.

Dosage for Preventive Vaccination (2 doses, 10-14 days apart):

Calves (14 days to 4 months old)5 cm³

Young and adult cattle (over 4 months old)10 cm³

Dosage for Treatment of Infected Animals (2 doses, 10-14 days apart):

Calves (under 4 months old)10 cm³

Young and adult cattle (over 4 months old)20 cm³

All newborn calves in both infected and non-infected farms must undergo mandatory preventive immunization against trichophytosis.

Vaccinated animals should be monitored for 30 days post-vaccination. A normal reaction includes the formation of a localized superficial crust (up to 20 mm) at the injection site, which naturally falls off within 20-30 days and does not require treatment.

The therapeutic effect of the vaccine appears 20-30 days after the second dose, with the gradual thinning and shedding of trichophytic crusts. Softening agents (fish oil, petroleum jelly, etc.) may be applied to speed up this process.

Restrictions

  • Animals with high fever, weakened condition, or other illnesses should not be vaccinated.
  • Pregnant animals in the final stage of pregnancy should not be vaccinated.
  • The vaccine must not be used in farms with acute infectious diseases until those diseases are eradicated.

Vaccination during the incubation period of trichophytosis may accelerate the disease's onset.

In infected farms, vaccination must be accompanied by veterinary and sanitary measures according to official disease control guidelines.

Meat and Milk Usage After Vaccination

  • Vaccinated animals can be slaughtered 10 days after vaccination.
  • Milk from clinically healthy vaccinated animals can be used without restrictions.
  • If emergency slaughter is required before the 10-day period, meat products should undergo veterinary-sanitary examination.

Vaccinated animals may be relocated or transported one month after the last vaccination without restrictions.

Personal Safety Measures

During vaccination, standard biosafety precautions should be followed.

  • Avoid contact with skin or mucous membranes. If contact occurs, wash thoroughly with water and disinfect.
